FYI - to those having the problem:
I've now gotten 9 consecutive successful boots with 2.0.34 by using the 'no_reset' parameter for the aic7xxx driver. No guarantees, but it's working for me. :)
I never would have known about it, but I went snooping around in the driver source (not that I would have a clue how to fix it...) and I found that parameter. I've since included it in lilo.conf and all is well.
append="aic7xxx=no_reset"
