Try swapping the NIC. I had a similar problem with a 3C905 last year where certain NFS transfers were blowing up. Drove me crazy! I dropped in a cheezy NE2000 card to just test it out and everything cleared up. At $24.95, it's the cheapest "commercial" diagnostic tool. ;)
