SubjectRe: no ppp in 2.1.105?
Hi, Robert. I'm sorry my advice didn't help you. I am having some
problems now as well.

I get:
pppd: unrecognized option '-v'

then a summary of pppd's usage (which makes sense--maybe you want the
"debug" option to pppd, or want to use -v with chat).

I hope it didn't really break your modem. :)

The error you got is caused by pppd's confusion over the version of Linux
being greater than 2.1.100.

I just tried pppd 2.3.5 and its associated chat with Linux 2.1.105, and
didn't even get that far:

Jun 13 21:38:40 topside pppd[6694]: pppd 2.3.5 started by trevor, uid 501
Jun 13 21:38:41 topside chat[6697]: abort on (BUSY)
Jun 13 21:38:41 topside chat[6697]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Jun 13 21:38:41 topside chat[6697]: send (AT^M)
Jun 13 21:38:41 topside chat[6697]: expect (OK)
Jun 13 21:39:26 topside chat[6697]: alarm
Jun 13 21:39:26 topside chat[6697]: Failed
Jun 13 21:39:26 topside pppd[6694]: Connect script failed
Jun 13 21:39:58 topside chat[6704]: abort on (BUSY)
Jun 13 21:39:58 topside chat[6704]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Jun 13 21:39:58 topside chat[6704]: send (AT^M)
Jun 13 21:39:58 topside chat[6704]: expect (OK)
Jun 13 21:40:43 topside chat[6704]: alarm
Jun 13 21:40:43 topside chat[6704]: Failed
Jun 13 21:40:43 topside pppd[6694]: Connect script failed

It kept repeating like that until I killed it, with the HS, RD, SD, TR,
and MR lights on my modem (a Hayes Optima v.34) staying lit. I tried the
chat from ppp-2.3.3 but had the same result. I shouldn't have been
surprised, since there were no substantial changes to that. I wonder why
the older version of chat worked for you though. I wonder whether the
older version of chat, with the newer pppd, would work for you. When I
ran chat interactively at the console, it logged messages such as

Jun 13 21:49:09 topside chat[6733]: expect (OK)
Jun 13 21:49:10 topside chat[6733]: OK
Jun 13 21:49:10 topside chat[6733]: -- got it

when I typed the responses it was waiting for.

My /etc/ppp/options looks very much like:

#debug
lock
name trevor
/dev/ttyS1 115200
asyncmap 0
defaultroute
connect '/bin/sync;/usr/sbin/chat -v \

idle 900

lcp-echo-failure 3000

bsdcomp 15,15
#demand

Some people reported problems with setserial and recent kernels. Here is
a patch which has been reported to correct them. I haven't tried it, but
it may fix our trouble with PPP.
