Could you check if the chip is *really* a msp3400c-c6? Maybe it is a newer
version (msp3430-xx ?) and the Windows driver kicks it into a msp3400
    compatible mode.

"insmod i2c i2c_debug=1" might help too. Should look like this:

    bt848-0: < 80+ > <- check if present
    bt848-0: < 80+ 00+ 80+ 00+ > <- reset #1
    bt848-0: < 80+ 00+ 00+ 00+ > <- reset #2
    bt848-0: < 80+ 10+ 00+ bb+ 00+ d0+ > <- start initialisation
    bt848-0: < 80+ 10+ 00+ 01+ 00+ 48+ >
    [ ... ]
    bt848-0: < 80+ 13+ 00+ 1e+ bt848-0: < 81+ =03+ =03- > <- get chip version
    bt848-0: < 80+ 13+ 00+ 1f+ bt848-0: < 81+ =00+ =06- >
msp3400: init: chip=MSP3400C-C6, registered as sound mixer
