I use the SB driver with an ESS1688 and experience the following problem with 2.1 kernels (currently 2.1.99): When I compile the sound drivers as modules, MIDI features are not accessible, no MIDI device configured in /dev/sndstat---and no error messages. Just as if I had CONFIG_MIDI=n in the 2.0 series. The same configuration works with drivers compiled in the kernel, as do modules in 2.0.
Possibly a Makefile/define conflict somewhere?
