Please disregard previous cries for help... The easiest way to fix a problem, it seems, is to ask for help, and if it is not immediatly offered, chances are you'll try again and figure it out, and look (or at least feel a bit) like a fool afterwards - as it turns out the problem was entirely my fault. I had some bad RAM, or at least, the motherboard is really picky about RAM (it's a Tyan) and that was causing the problems - a "mem=64M" in lilo and the SMP kernel actually booted properly! Well, it seems to be working. Truely awesome, guys :)
