This was on a 430FX chipset Pentium 133/66 with 32 MB RAM with Tulip 10/100 Ethernet and and IDE disk and CDROM.
It got to the IDE detection, printed out an "unable to handle kernel paging request"-style panic, and hung (shift-PageUp did not work).
I compiled for both UP and SMP with the same result. If anyone is interested I can transcribe the details of the error screen tonight, but it seems the same thing is occurring on on Kelley L's PII-266 and Harry Ronis' unnamed system, probably it fails on a lot of machines but the pattern is not yet apparent. Kelley L reported the problems seemed to have been introduced in io_apic.c and irq.c since 2.1.102.
