In going thru the kernel config options, read closely, ups must have SMP=1 commented out. In prior versions, 102, 101, ... this doesn't seem to have been enforced. In 103, it is. Commented it out in the TOP level Makefile. # SMP=1. Rebuild the kernel, it works.
What I don't know, is why is it enforced now, and how ???.
Running on a 166 Vanilla Pentium, UP.
