    I just tried booting 2.1.102, with the patches I've posted to the list
    (lowlevel/Config.in, lowlevel/Makefile, and spelling fixes) and with SMP
    commented out, on my home computer. I am having the same problems. I
    have ld.so 1.9.8 here. It's not a problem with the permissions on /:

    # ls -ld /
    drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 1024 May 15 02:20 /

    I don't have the problem with Linux 2.1.89.
