I have discovered what appears to be a bug with the configurable files in /proc/ide.
Writing zero-length strings to the configuration files results in a freeze.
This can be repeated doing: # echo "">/proc/ide/ide1/hdd/settings - or - # echo "">/proc/ide/ide1/config
The system's loadavg also slowly rises until the shell from which the command was executed is killed.
