Of course, that command will just hang forever.

Yup, a modified stty(1) can do this, but nobody else has one.
I'm killing pppd with "kill -INT"
At the very least, the kernel cleanup oughta reset clocal, to make /dev/ttyS* a reasonable alternative to /dev/cua*.
