Digital's "memory-channel", used for clustering under VMS and Unix, involves 64-bit PCI adapters at both ends, IIRC. They also get premium dollars for the hardware and software...
I recall asking the Digital rep whether memory-channel supported IP. He had to check with the engineers, but later affirmed that IP is supported, though the clustering protocols are not themselves dependent on it.
