Hi David,
I once raised almost the same question on linux-smp. You might want to search in the archives on linuxhq, february-edition. (URL: http://www.linuxhq.com/lnxlists/linux-smp/lm_9802/ ) Search for the thread/subject "Off-topic: Swap-partitions." There's also a lot of advice on how to create large swap-partitions/-files in the archives, swap on raid and so forth.
FYI: Largest single swap-partition is ~ 128Mb. (But then you can do some tricks ... ;o)
man mkswap for more information.
