I would like to thank Pavel Machek for suggesting what appears to be the cause of the hard freezes that I have been experiencing under 2.1.93-95: kmod. By just rebuilding everything with kmod deactivated, I seem to have a 2.1.95 configuration that is not experiencing these hard freezes, at least in the forty-nine minutes in which it has been running so far. I have made no other changes whatsoever to my configuration: same hardware, same "fully modularized" kernel configuration using an intial ramdisk, etc.
I'll be doing some more experimentation now to see if my changes to kmod are part of the problem, but I am sending this email now so as to avoid having anyone else spend cycles wondering about this problem.
