I found a program on RedHat's website once called hwdetect that seems to
do some things along these lines.  You might have a look for it. It would
scan the hardware and report serial ports and modems.  I had converted to
a debian package but have deleted it since.

I just looked around on the site and could not find it. A few people 
downloaded it when I had it up on my ftp site so maybe they will see this
and offer it.
