I though Linux was the *bomb* when I started running it..
386dx33/8(+387).. Kernel .12.. (Though I didn't use it much till .99)
I think ram is an important thing though.. I've used it on 4meg boxes (like a 386sx/10 *underclocked*) and it was annoyingly slow..
