Its based on a clear set of highly modular internal interfaces on the X server.

No - there are lots of people who don't like athena widgets, or styles of X desktop app. X has nothing to do with this.

X allows you to draw arbitary pixels. What more did you want

Nobody has ever achieved these completely contradictory statements. It can't be simple and small and offer full control of every card.
