2.1.89 is a bit of a swap-monster - there was discussion about it when
2.1.89 first came out. So I expect your problems are due to an issue
with that particular kernel, rather than recent 2.1 kernels in
general.

So either go back to 2.1.88, or try a 2.1.90 pre-patch.

Low memory testing is probably a useful exercise though, precisely
because it will be affected more by ups-and-down in the VM behaviour
of Linux.
