Subjectgcc 2.8.0 seems OK here...
I've just compiled several kernels with gcc 2.8, and have been using gcc
2.8 since shortly after it was relesed with no problems...

The kernel I'm on now used these CFLAGS:
-O3 -fforce-addr -fomit-frame-pointer -finline -finline-functions
-ffast-math -funroll-loops -mpentium

uname -a:
Linux jennifer-unix 2.1.90 #10 Thu Mar 19 19:16:31 EST 1998 i586

gcc -v:
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-pc-linux-gnu/2.8.0/specs
gcc version 2.8.0

X -version: (As distributed with RH5.0)
XFree86 Version 3.3.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: August 4 1997
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux 2.0.31 i686 [ELF]
Configured drivers:
S3V: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
s3_ViRGE

The distribution was originaly Slackware 3.2, but most of the executables
were replaced with custom-compiled versions at one point or another, and
most of the framework has been replaced with RH5.0. The kernel is 2.1.90,
straight off the presses. .config avaible upon request
