Read linux/documentation/Changes: Either apply a simple patch (to be found in the Changes document for kernels <2188) to pppd or upgrade to pppd-2.3.3.
The problem is, that Linux returns a error code on setting a route on a not ifconfig'ed up network device (ENOTCONN?). This has been changed somewhere between 2165 and 2185. pppd-220f erroneously exits on that.
