With Linux 2.1.x, and a recent glibc, you should be able to use sigaction/siginfo_t approach. I found the best docs for this in the Solaris manpages (sigaction(2), siginfo(5)). The glibc manual doesn't appear to have been updated with this info.
Note that this is based only on scanning of Linux 2.1.x and glibc snapshot source code; I haven't run any test programs yet.
