I'm not sure what the point of this discussion even is. When I was working of uvfat (before a different version was released), I just used vfat aliases (i.e. 8.3 names) as the way to do the lookup. This allows both uvfat and umsdos to work in the same directories. It was backward compatible to an extent: newly created uvfat filename would cause a bit of a problem for old umsdos distributions, but an updated umsdos distribution would work with both the old and the new.
I believe the version of uvfat that was released had similar features. I had a discussion with the author at the time of its release, and it led me to believe he had done it the way I felt was reasonably correct.
