/dev/temperature is only an interface to the temperature sensor that is part of the hardware watchdog timer card - ICS WDT501P. Integrated motherboard LM78 circuitry is wholly different, and more featurefull.
From /usr/src/linux/Documentation/watchdog.txt: "A second temperature monitoring interface is available on the WDT501P cards and provides /dev/temperature. This is the machine internal temperature in degrees farenheit. Each read returns a single byte giving the temperature."
