Take a look at autofs, the example configuration file in RedHat-5.1 at
least show how to implement some of these capabilities. The basic idea is
to automount the filesystem on reference. Umounting still takes some time
(tunable). OTOH, AFAIU little (if any) CDROM drives tell back that the user
is trying to eject the disk so as to start the umount.
