Hi!
SHORT STORY:
Apology for making fuss about mem=8M. It was pilot error.
LONG STORY:
Due to patches for swapping over network, I had brain-dead settings of freepages - I got freepages.min value > freepages.low (not really, but you got the idea). Machine did really crazy things after that. First I suspected hardware (because processes like ssh and emacs seem to crash on signal 11 when there's not enough memory), then I started suspecting kernel.
