Quite some time ago I looked into this and found in the newest SystemV Interface definition I could get, that there was the normal pid_t used. Older versions used ushort instead. I sent patches to use _kernel_pid_t against 2.1.30 to linux kernel and 2.196 to Linus and but they got dropped back then. I can redo them, if needed/wanted.
