I made a new root fs today by mounting a remote fs via the network and taring it to a new drive on another machine, i.e.,
mount server:/ /mnt cd /mnt tar -clf - . | (cd /new/drive; tar -xf -)
I found that several executable files were corrupt -important ones like agetty and mount. NotGood(tm).
Both machines run Linux 2.1.128. The corrupt files are the correct length, but have 13-byte nulls in them at offset 16381, and 41126.
Cheers, Dick Johnson ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** Penguin : Linux version 2.1.128 on an i686 machine (400.59 BogoMips). Warning : It's hard to remain at the trailing edge of technology.
