%gunzip <MAKEDEV.gz >MAKEDEV.new
Assume MAKEDEV.gz unzips to MAKEDEV.new
% su # cp MAKEDEV.new /dev # cd /dev # ./MAKEDEV.new generic # exit
This will make all new 'generic' devices including ptys. Remote logins (etcetera) will now work. --guaranteed.
