Yes, there was such a thread. Luckily it died.

No. It's peanuts. The only vaguely acceptable alternative (I suggested it, so I'm biased) would be to have a linux-core.tar.gz (without arch nor drivers) and have the `make config' download the needed drivers and arch files. Way too much trouble for very little benefit.
