Could you send me your /usr/src/linux/.config file?
In particular, I'm interested to find out if you have "Always Defragment" turned on. Also, in your init scripts, do you load your firewall chain rules first, or enable forwarding first?
My machine reliably goes boom within seconds of "echo '1' >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward". It tries to dereference a null pointer, then gets an oops, and then a kernel panic.
I'm not sure, but I'm running masquaraded ICMP traffic at the time the problem occurs (ping internic.net from a masq'd machine).
