I think this is a redhat initscripts bug rather than a kernel problem. I got the same messages when I put in some remote filesystems in /etc/fstab. the problem is that it tries to mount them before starting portmap. the fix is cd /etc/rc.d/rc3.d mv S40portmap S11portmap Redhat 5.2 has fixed this.
