I thought X uses PF_UNIX (UNIX domain) sockets rather than TCP to localhost (unless one is insisting by doing DISPLAY=localhost:0.0), so although performance degradation is always bad, X is not under any threat.
I also noticed 98% packet loss when doing ping -f localhost on 2.1.127.
