Amen to that. Ideally you want a nice graphical logo (Of a penguin, most likely), with a scrolling window showing any kernel messages.
Also, give the user the option of pressing key during boot-up to disable the graphical mode, just in case. :)
I'm hoping Linus himself has an interest in this sort of thing, what with wanting to target workstation users (I.e. make the whole system look as friendly as possible).
