I've seen this too with Linux 2.0.36-pre14 and a 3c509 (without shared IRQs). I have until now assumed it was a hardware problem.
First I get a lot of "eth0: transmit timed out, tx_status 00 status e000" then the eth0 NIC hangs.
eth1 never hangs, and that is a 3c509 too.
