Well, I think it has become more than a discussion... I mean more than a rationale discussion, it seems that the time to judge what is more important, the kernel or the compiler which produce the kernel, has arrive!
First of all, who cares? If Linus and others take care of kernel, and they say that they will use gcc-2.7.2.3 then you may complain about it, but you won't get anything..., Linus rules here, so... try it "hurd"er XD Second, my opinion is that we have two "easy" alternatives, - Remaking the kernel in order to use "correct" assembly code - Adding a flag to egcs/pgcc/gcc, say something like --fkernel, that would allow "incorrect" assembly code
The point is who makes what?, it's clear that the first is more hard to do and with those weird changes on gcc/egcs politics you don't know how long it will last..., the second is a really *bad* solution but, what the hell, we all know how things got made here XD
