I have an alpha (164LX, 533MHz) that also hangs at boot, but not every time. It hangs ~10% of the time, and I've seen it do it with both 2.1.125 and 2.1.126 kernels. I'm using egcs 1.1b. Here's the kernel output:
Oct 25 00:17:05 draal kernel: Linux version 2.1.126 (root@draal.physics.wisc.edu) (gcc version egcs-2.91.57 19980901 (egcs-1.1 release)) #13 Sun Oct 25 04:15:24 CST 1998 Oct 25 00:17:05 draal kernel: Booting on EB164 variation LX164 using machine vector LX164 Oct 25 00:17:05 draal kernel: Command line: bootdevice=sda1 bootfile=vmlinuz Oct 25 00:17:05 draal kernel: HWRPB cycle frequency bogus. It hung at the the two different points on different boots. Since I can't reproduce this with regularity, debugging it will be difficult, but I will let the list know if I discover anything.
