I think I'm going to stick my head out and say that sysctl() calls to get
the kernel information are the best way to go.

I'm sick of writing stupid parsers to read the /proc stuff. Currently I
have to maintain hacks to the /proc/cpuinfo for most Linux architectures
in order to gather the information and present it in the form of my
.signature for my LinuxInfo program.

Flames to /dev/null. Elogently written arguments for or against will be
welcome.
