I've upgraded to modutils-2.1.121, which seems to fix the problem I was having with insmod segfaulting.
It doesn't make insmod work when it's strace'd, but then as the only reason I was strace'ing it was to find out why it segfaulted, I don't particularly care.
If it was documented, perhaps I would have tried the new version of modutils earlier...
