My 8595 has 0xf8 for model id also. Submodel is 0x40 and bios rev is 0x3.
We had a problem like this when we were trying to use that same id to tell
if the box had the vfd display to do neat tricks with drive access lights.

How about just checking the first few cases and if those return falses,
check the other cases.
