Best's email tech support was fairly prompt, and while I don't think I was conversing with a Linux old-timer (he thought /dev/cua* might be something new with RedHat 5.1) he wasn't stupid or clueless, either, and he pointed out the "identify" and "status" commands for my Patriot Pro without prompting. The problem turned out to be a short or open in the motherboard-to-DB9 serial connector. Now all I have to do is grab the UPS HOWTO and stick in a good powerfail shutdown script.
