The problem with the 1542CF is entirely Linux 2.1.x. The C was very
sensitive to having good termination the CF and CP are not. The driver
is broken , the hardware is fine.

Perhaps, but the 1542 is currently sold, maintained and still the fastest
ISA SCSI controller you are likely to get get.

Things like the seagate st-02 are a different matter ;)
