Hmm, I just tried setting various directory permissions with -d xxxx, and it seemed to work OK. Are the file permissions working properly?

Smbumount complains? If a mount has timed out, even unmounting may cause it to try to reconnect, but the umount should succeed in any event.
If you try to access the fs again after timing out, does it reconnect properly?
