<DELURK> Richard/Leonard-- An excerpt from a Solaris 2.5.1/x86 system's /etc/vfstab follows:
### File: /etc/vfstab ### System: Solaris 2.5.1/x86, using only IDE disks ### Note: System boots into NT Workstation, Solaris, and Win95 for ### testing...FAT16 partition used for NT/95 boot partition ### and to allow information interchange between the OSs. #device device mount FS fsck mount mount #to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options /dev/dsk/c0d0s6 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s6 /usr ufs 1 no - /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:c - /win95 pcfs - yes -
### EOF: /etc/vfstab
The "p" is only used when referring to non-Solaris partitions on the disk, AFAIK. Otherwise, the nomenclature is Controller/Drive/Slice for IDE, and Controller/Target(LUN)/Drive/Slice for SCSI.
Personally, as has already been pointed out in other messages, I see no direct advantage to "compatibility" with Solaris or other naming schemes, if it comes at the expense of comprehensibility.
