Excuse me? Some most certantly do use the host's cpu. I suggest you get
your facts straight.

Go buy some modems and see which ones will work in a 386sx16 running
win3.1...

Usr Winmodes are cheap.

I stopped using USR products a little after the sportsters came out..
Thats about when both their product and support became shit.

I called to rma a p.o.s. usr 33.6k modem about a week ago.. Took me
2.5hours on the phone.. I had to go through 4people before I got someone
with authorization to accept my rma (I refused to play the reinstall this,
reinstall that game.. I knew the modem was bad, I work in a computer store
and have for many years..) I have no respect for a manufactur who will
make a professional tinker with it and wont accept my word that I've done
it.. I do know how to trouble shoot modems.. :)

Thats not why they couldnt move the dsp onto the computer. Digital Signal
Processor.. It processes digital signals, not analog ones. They just leave
a dac/adc on the card.. However, I dont think it's likely that any
manufactures have moved all the dsp functions offf the card.. Some things
are just too processor intensive..
