    Ah, that may the significant difference. I appear to have:

    kernel: eth0: 3Com 3c595 Vortex 100baseTX at 0xfcc0, 00:20:af:ee:ab:6a, IRQ 11
    kernel: Internal config register is 100db, transceivers 0xe10a.
    kernel: 64K word-wide RAM 3:1 Rx:Tx split, 10baseT interface.
