I would suggest not to, since it would introduce yet another incompatibility. In fact, I would highly vote against this change; making them a config option I can see (or dependent on a.out support) but backward compatibility is important for people living in the real world...
Also, I would prefer a naming convention for syscalls which didn't use "old" or "new" but rather numbers, say select_2() for the second version of the select system call, etc.
