Some applications demand it. I.e. large simulations, such as with ASIC
designs, etc. I've seen systems with several hundred megs of RAM and
several Gigs of swap for large designs. Interactive performance is
unimportant in such situations, since they usually run overnight (or
longer!).

However, if you were to point out that not many applications that fall under
this category (at least in the workplace) support Linux or any of the other
free UNIXes, I'd have to agree with you. But it seems to me that such
conditions should still be handled at least as well as with commercial
UNIXes that are subjected to them.
