I beg to differ. You can hack modules.dep in /lib/modules/<vesion> by hand to make st and sr_mod depend on aha1542. The kernel will signal the need for st (or sr_mod), and kerneld will load aha1542 along with it.
You must remember to rehack modules.dep each time you run depmod -a though.
