Try running fdisk/mbr under dos or in the dos mode of W95. This will install a valid master boot record guaranteed*. Create a linux bootfloppy first because the command will wipe out lilo and activate the dos/w95 partition. Make sure you set lilo.conf to install in /dev/hda and the run lilo
