Thats flat wrong, I've had 2.1.38 running on a 386SX/10 (underclocked) with mono, ide, 4megs ram, ethernet for quite a while.. I use it do demo the power of linux on limited hardware.. If there is a kernel incompatibility with that machine then it's specific to that MB..
Furthermore, you are having a fit that he can't run elf bins and such.. Why are you having him run a development kernel??? 2.0.x runs elf bins.. I've got 5 386es here (and two 486slcs) running 2.0.x kernels.. They all run fine.
